For about 2 weeks now, I have been measuring and drawing up plans to start a fireplace update including built in shelves. After looking at many photos of other mantels and fireplaces, Amanda and I have decided on a style that will match the era that our house was built. In doing so, we will replace our Target DVD stands (which have served us well, thank you!) with permanent bookshleves. All will be painted white to contrast with the deep blue we painted last weekend. Should look pretty sharp when we are done. The goal will be to end up with something similar to what you see below.
EXAMPLE: Our mantel should look similar to this, minus the slate tiling.
EXAMPLE: Built-ins - Ours will have one shelf on each side instead of the two as you see here.
If any of you have attempted this project before, I am open to time-saving/cost-cutting pointers!
